The Poetry Circle

We are known among the stars
for our poems, not our wars.

Well, that's not exactly what Robert Ardry said, but it is the sentiment.  Totally.

So what do we do?  We each bring half a dozen copies of one of our poems to hand round and discuss, and we also touch on the work of established poets.

We make constructive suggestions and exchange ideas, and talk up the merits of free verse and/or rhyming poetry.

We have two poetry workshops coming up, dates to be confirmed. The Path Back... Click here to know more.  And further into the season we have another called Clever Critiquing Improves Your Craft (details to follow).

We have also been running our own international poetry competition for thirteen years, with the prize money recently more than doubled to nearly £1300.

And have you heard of Wedgwood College?  It is an intimate site of gracious houses with small lawns and many trees, in the village of Barlaston, outside Stoke on Trent.  They run twice-yearly weekend poetry courses. You have just missed one on U A Fanthorpe, September, and another in June on Ted Hughes' Crow poems.  The food is excellent, the price very reasonable, and did I mention the canalside walks?  For full details on future courses click here to email them.

By the way, to change the subject completely, we are hoping to replace me, the circle leader.  So we are looking for someone with a love of poetry and an analytical turn of mind (which I don't have).  Does that sound like you?  Do get in touch!

When and where to find us

We meet during term-time, at 7.30 on the third Tuesday of the month at the University of Northampton, Park Campus, Boughton Green Road, room Sulgrave S008.  (I asked for 007, but they wouldn't have it.).  Anyway, as long as we can see the rabbits and squirrels on the lawn outside, what else matters?  Click on the road and campus maps in the left-hand column for help.

If you live in the region, join us; we will make you feel welcome.  Visitors are welcome too, if you're passing through.

For more information phone me, Julia Tonkinson, on 01604 720568, or click here to email me.
